PROGRAM DESIGN: Roads to Success (RTS) facilitates a variety of youth programs including after-school, summer camps, retreats, conferences and summer employment opportunities reaching thousands of young people throughout NYC each year. RTS emphasizes the youth development practice of the Circle of Courage in all our programs; creating an environment of Belonging, where young people can build their Independence, find and develop their Mastery skill, and practice Generosity in their communities. At the core of our programs are staff training strategies that enable our young professionals to develop extraordinarily meaningful relationships with the young people in their care who we call Our Future Leaders because that is what they all are.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Recess Coach is responsible for creating and facilitating dynamic, fun, and age-appropriate activities for entire classes of students grades K-8. This role requires a high level of creativity, energy, and the ability to engage with children of various ages effectively.

ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE:

Supervisor: Program Director 
Max Hours: 15 per week
Days: 5 per week, Monday – Friday
Compensation: $20 – $25 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Activity Planning and Implementation
    • Design and implement engaging and age-appropriate activities for students in grades K-8.
    • Ensure activities are inclusive and cater to a diverse range of interests and abilities.
Team Collaboration
    • Work collaboratively with other coaches, especially when managing large classes.
    • Coordinate with the teaching staff to ensure smooth transitions between classroom and recess activities.
Time Management and Organization
    • Efficiently manage time to ensure that activities begin and end as scheduled.
    • Organize and prepare materials and spaces needed for each activity.
Student Safety and Supervision
    • Monitor students during recess to ensure a safe and positive environment.
    • Lead transitions between recess and lunch periods, ensuring orderly and timely movement of students.
    • Proactively address and resolve potential challenges or conflicts among students.
Relationship Building
    • Develop positive relationships with students across different grades and classes.
    • Be a positive role model, demonstrating punctuality, professionalism, and a positive demeanor.
Logistical Support
    • Coordinate bathroom breaks for students, adhering to policies that ensure their safety and well-being.
    • Additional duties as assigned. 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • A degree or certification in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least one year of experience working with school-age children in a group setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead children's activities.
  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills.


CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • First Aid and CPR certifications are a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work takes place in school playgrounds, gyms, or multipurpose rooms.
  • Typical job hours are aligned with school hours, Monday - Friday, with occasional evening or weekend events.
  • May involve moderate physical activity including organizing equipment and actively participating in children's games.
