PROGRAM DESIGN: Roads to Success (RTS) facilitates a variety of youth programs including after-school, summer camps, retreats, conferences and summer employment opportunities reaching thousands of young people throughout NYC each year. RTS emphasizes the youth development practice of the Circle of Courage in all our programs; creating an environment of Belonging, where young people can build their Independence, find and develop their Mastery skill, and practice Generosity in their communities. At the core of our programs are staff training strategies that enable our young professionals to develop extraordinarily meaningful relationships with the young people in their care who we call Our Future Leaders because that is what they all are.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The College and Career Readiness Instructor at Roads to Success is responsible for effectively delivering our comprehensive College and Career Readiness (Pathways) Curriculum to middle and high school students. This vital role encompasses not only the facilitation of engaging, curriculum-focused activities but also extends to the active participation in organizing and attending various relevant events and trips as part of the Roads to Success College & Career Pathways programs. A significant aspect of this role involves supporting the social, emotional, academic, and professional development of participants, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge for their future educational and career endeavors. The instructor plays a crucial part in guiding students through their developmental journey, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of college and the workforce.

ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE:

Supervisor: College Access & Pathways Program Coordinator 
Max Hours: 20 per week
Days: 3 per week, Monday – Friday
Compensation: $20 – $25 per hour. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Activity Planning and Implementation:
  • Facilitate both in-person and virtual instructional activities based on the RTS Pathways curriculum.
  • Creatively design lessons and activities that align with the curriculum, ensuring they are engaging and appropriate for the target age group.
Lesson Development and Adaptation:
  • Prepare lessons and projects that support targeted learning objectives, adapting teaching methods and materials to cater to varied student interests and learning styles.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and pursue their areas of interest, fostering an environment of discovery and growth.
Time Management and Organization:
  • Employ effective time management and organizational skills within a classroom setting, ensuring a structured and efficient learning experience.
  • Prepare materials and organize spaces as needed for each instructional activity.
Collaboration and Classroom Management:
  • Work collaboratively with staff to maintain order and active participation during the program.
  • Establish and enforce rules of behavior for participants, ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment.
Individualized Student Support:
  • Provide one-on-one assistance to students requiring extra help or attention, tailoring support to individual needs.
  • Create a creative, fun, and adaptive learning environment that caters to the diverse needs of students.
Professional Development and Communication:
  • Participate in mandatory scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, and individual supervisions.
  • Communicate effectively with the Program Director regarding any conflicts or issues related to worksite assignments.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Keep abreast of updates and changes in educational practices relevant to the college and career readiness field.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as requested by the College Access & Pathways Program Coordinator. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • A degree or certification in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least three years of experience working with school-age children in a group setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead educational activities.
  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • First Aid and CPR certifications are a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work takes place in one or more school buildings, which may require climbing stairs.
  • Typical job hours are aligned with school hours, Monday – Friday and events will take place during occasional nights and weekends.
  • Travel via public transportation or car may be required throughout NYC.
